Company Review: AirBnb
The fortunate people who work in travel get to combine business with pleasure on a daily basis, and there’s no reason why you can’t do the same. A lot of people used to think that they need to do something boring like law or investment banking to get paid the big-bucks. The global financial crisis turned this on its head. Investment Banks aren’t the ‘Millionaire Factories’ that they once were, prompting ambitious job seekers to look further afield. Some of the clever job seekers realised that work needn’t mean slaving behind a computer screen for 14 hours straight. One of the companies that we love here at Talented Heads is AirBnb; let me explain why it’s a really awesome company to work for…
A little bit about AirBnb
Airbnb is an online community marketplace for people to list, discover, and book unique accommodation around the world. Whether a flat for a night, a castle for a week, or a villa for a month, Airbnb connects people to unique travel experiences, at any price point, in more than 33,000 cities and 192 countries. With a growing community of users, Airbnb is an easy way for individuals to lease out their accommodation on a short-term basis. AirBnb has seen a lot of recent success, they are quickly becoming a house-hold name. They are still a very young company, having only started in 2008, but they rapidly progressed from ‘Start-up’ to fully fledged global organisation.
AirBnb’s headquarters are in San Francisco, and they have offices in Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Hamburg, London, Milan, Moscow, Paris, Sao Paulo, Singapore and Sydney. They also advertise remote positions which do not require employees to be based in any of these cities. Due to their rapid expansion, it’s likely that we’ll see further office locations popping up in the near future.
The types of jobs on offer at Airbnb fall under the following departments: Engineering, Data Science/Analytics, Finance/Accounting, Administrative, Business Development, Community, Customer Service, Design, Employee Experience, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal, Marketing, Photography, Product, Sales, and Translation. There are a breath of work opportunities available, ranging from entry level to highly skilled.
Why Talented Heads thinks that you will love working at AirBnb
You seriously have to watch this video….
AirBnb is seriously cool, and they’re also successful. As a company, they’re widely speculated to be worth more than $US1billion, and they are continuing to grow rapidly as they become better known.
This next video sheds a little more light about what it’s like to work there, the people, the culture, the leadership team and their motivations…
AirBnb has a really young and cool leadership team. It was founded in 2008, and the co-founders are still really young, they are all around the age of 30. Last week in London I had the opportunity to see Joe Gebbia, CPO and Co-founder, speak live at the FT-Telefonica Millennial Summit. He had a really amazing presence, and the crowd was captivated by his enthusiasm and charisma. I would relish the opportunity to work for such a dynamic and gung-ho boss, he was seriously cool.
Recently Talented Heads conducted a survey about what Millennials are looking for in an employer. 80% of Millennials said that they want inspiring leadership and positive morale. There is absolutely no doubt that AirBnb has both of these things.
This is what AirBnb says about working with them: “What we build in here brings people together in the real world, grants access to the unknown, inspires and creates a world of potential, and it’s only the beginning. Travel runs through our veins. We’ve collectively travelled thousands of miles and we’re showing no signs of stopping.”
I’m sold, when can I start?
Employee Benefits and Perks
AirBnb employees receive a variety of awesome perks such as:
- Each employee gets $2000 per year to travel anywhere in the world they want.
- Airbnb provides fresh, healthy lunches daily.
- Free Office Yoga
- Awesome office locations
- Bring your dog to work day, daily.
- Fun employee field trips
- …and apparently AirBnb employees give the best high-fives in town!
AirBnb is rapidly becoming one of the biggest players in the travel industry, and they are perfectly placed in the online and digital space to take advantage of the rising usage of technology within the travel industry. They still have a long way to grow, they are a young company, and if you get in early you will have the best opportunity to benefit from this growth. They are innovative, creative, and forward thinking. If these are traits that you possess, you will be able to grow at your full potential at this organisation. AirBnb will propel you forwards, there’ll be no treading-water at this place; if you are talented and good at your job you will excel here. Get in now, you’ll be thanking me in five years.
AirBnb is still a relatively small company in terms of number of staff, and as such they only have limited job openings available. The vast majority of new roles coming available are in the San Fran office, roles in other locations are limited at the moment. Roles at AirBnb are highly sought after and you will face steep competition to get in the door, but persevere, it will be worth it.
